We have embedded safety into our culture, reinforced by leadership, standards, practices, and experience. We developed our safety program to establish clear accountabilities, promote active partnership and provide a consistent process to help prevent serious injuries, fatalities, and loss-of-containment events. We aspire to a working environment where nobody gets hurt. Preventing serious incidents and loss-of-containment events is our top priority. Pencco is committed to continuously improving safety and in this spirit, we innovate to find better ways to protect our workforce and the environment.
To prevent serious injuries in the workplace, we focus on the planning and execution of high-risk activities. We identify and initiate action plans to engage front-line leaders and employees and enable safe work. Safety committee teams work to implement and scale our serious injuries prevention efforts. Lessons learned are shared throughout the company and applied in our daily practices. Teams utilize soft skills to communicate and determine what changes are needed through the Hierarchy of Controls to best proactively protect our employees, environment, and equipment while providing the highest quality of products to our customers.
Pencco leadership serves as a role model for safety and supports the program wholeheartedly. This involves Pencco’s safety vision, goals, and policies, we must also communicate the value of a safe workplace and the respect that all employees must maintain for safety ideals. Pencco’s leadership team undergoes extensive and various trainings, to aid and coach employees in the workplace.
Pencco’s safety program touches every individual withing the organization. It is a permanent topic of discussion embedded into the operation fabric of Pencco and aligns with all functions throughout the company to ensure that it receives the attention and the resources every employee deserve. Pencco believes that everyone must be accountable for safety and feel empowered to take the steps necessary to ensure their own safety, the safety of their fellow employees, and the safety of our customers. Along with various coaching and trainings, Pencco’s “Safe New Deal” was developed as a voluntary employee observation and near miss reporting program, in order to help build a safer work environment. Employees are encouraged to speak up and be the voice of change when they recognize hazardous work practices, environments, conditions, and more. The Safe New Deal provides education on best practices to employees and assists in preventing complacency of safety in the workplace by actively looking at themselves, other employees, and the environment around them.
Changing organizational behavior is what transforms a company from good to world class. When a passion for safety in the workplace is shared by the entire team, it encourages employees to get involved, set expectations, modify behavior, and make the right decisions. Pencco strives each day to promote and raise the expectations of safety by changing the mindset of each employee by modifying behaviors both on the job and at home to always make the right decision when it comes to safety.
Developing employee’s capabilities and skill sets is a crucial part of not only investing in people but also investing in their safety and those around them. Employees are mentored to contribute to the safety program, driving them to actively participate in safety practices and establishing a sense of ownership while creating a safer workplace.
It is essential that safe operating practices are consistently followed, fixtures and equipment are properly cared for and maintained, and that the overall environment remains safe at all times. Pencco has developed and is constantly building on sound safety audits and inspection programs help not only to ensure compliance and manage risks but also identify areas needing improvement to help allow us to have a more proactive approach to various safeguards verses a reactive approach.
