Ferrous sulfate and ferrous chloride are used in water treatment for the purpose of dechlorination. Hydrolyzed chlorine in water primarily exists as hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a strong oxidizer in its ionized form. Hypochlorite ions oxidize ferrous ions, removing chlorine from solution. The resultant ferric ions precipitate as they aid in coagulation, reducing TSS.
