Hydrofluorosilicic acid (HFS) is commonly used in the fluoridation of water for prevention of dental decay. Some communities have naturally occurring levels of HFS in their water and have no need to fluoridate. Others have a lack of HFS in their water and elect to add it to provide cavity protection for members of the community who otherwise might not receive it through dental treatments or otherwise.
